Governor Mutfwang Reviews Mining Ban: 159 Operators Cleared to Resume as Plateau State Begins Mining Sector Reforms

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has announced the clearance of 159 mining operators to resume activities following the five-month suspension of mining across the state. The decision, taken on February 21, 2025, through Executive Order 001, aimed to reform the sector, protect youth from exploitation, and enhance community safety.

Speaking at a press conference on May 23, 2025, the Governor emphasized that the suspension was necessary to halt illegal and unsafe mining practices. A Technical Committee was set up to screen operators and ensure compliance with national mining laws. Those cleared include:

• 6 Mining Licenses

• 15 Small Scale Mining Leases

• 15 Exploration Licenses

• 5 Artisanal Mining Permits

• 1 Quarry Lease

• 118 Tin Sheds/Buying Centers

Uncleared operators remain banned from all sites. Formalization of artisanal miners into cooperatives is underway, and a new Gemstone Skills Centre will train youths in sustainable mining practices.

The Governor warned buying centers against dealing with unauthorized or underage miners, promising strict enforcement and prosecution. He thanked stakeholders for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to building a safe, fair, and thriving mining sector in Plateau State.
