Plateau Specialist Hospital Gets New Diagnostic Lab, EMR System, and Admin Block
As part of activities marking Democracy Day, Plateau State Governor Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has commissioned a state-of-the-art high-tech diagnostic laboratory, a pediatric ward, and a modern administrative block at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital in Jos. The facility, which features cutting-edge medical equipment valued at over ₦2 billion and a new Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the state.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Mutfwang emphasized that the new facility is part of his administration’s strategic vision to upgrade the state’s healthcare system to meet both national and international standards.
“I am honoured to formally commission this medical laboratory complex — the building and the equipment — for the improvement of healthcare services in Plateau and beyond. To the glory of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen,” the governor declared.
The high-tech diagnostic complex, pediatric unit, and other upgrades are aimed at providing residents with timely, accurate medical diagnostics and care, reducing dependence on facilities outside the state.
The Chief Medical Director of Plateau Specialist Hospital, Prof. Christopher Sabo Yilgwan, lauded the governor for transforming previously abandoned projects into what he described as a “world-class medical facility.” He noted that the introduction of the EMR system marks a major digital transformation in hospital management and aligns the institution with global best practices.
“This project has significantly upgraded our diagnostic capabilities,” Prof. Yilgwan stated. “We are now poised to serve not only Plateau residents but the wider West African region as a medical response hub.”
He further expressed gratitude for the completion of other stalled projects, including the pediatric complex, solar energy room, and administrative blocks — initiatives that he said had been abandoned by past administrations.
Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, described the commissioning as a “miracle,” praising Governor Mutfwang’s focused leadership in the health sector.
“Since assuming office, His Excellency has reactivated the pharma-grade stock warehouse at the Drug and Commodity Management Agency, which is now among the best in the country,” Ba’amlong said.
He added that dormant hospitals in Mabudi, Kwang, and Riyom have been revived, while the long-neglected Bokkos Cottage Hospital was refurbished. The state has also revitalized 82 primary healthcare centers, with health insurance enrolment increasing from 20,000 to over 120,000 beneficiaries under the current administration.
The Democracy Day celebration also featured the commissioning of other key infrastructure projects, including the Utonkon overhead bridge-Abattoir Road, 15 new Tin City Metro Buses under the revitalized Plateau Express Service, a newly constructed administrative building, and a renovated block at the Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos campus. A hall at the polytechnic was also named in honour of former Governor Joshua Dariye.
The projects reflect Governor Mutfwang’s broader commitment to infrastructure and social development aimed at improving the quality of life for Plateau citizens.
